Auckland Airport has a concrete runway, with asphalt and concrete used across the remainder of the airfield. Like similar airports around the world, the maintenance of concrete slabs is a “forever project”.

Every week our pavement engineers are on the job, ensuring the apron, runway, aircraft stands and taxiways are in top condition.

With about 13,000 aircraft movements on the airfield each month, the work must be carefully coordinated and completed efficiently and safely to minimise disruption. Old concrete is removed, stockpiled, and crushed for reuse in future infrastructure projects.

This year, the programme will include a full reconstruction of Taxiway Lima and the resurfacing of Taxiway Foxtrot. The work will incorporate recycled asphalt, concrete and materials with protective properties designed to extend the life of the surface.

Looking ahead, significant pavement renewals are planned for the main runway in 2030, ensuring that Auckland Airport continues to meet the demands of future air travel.
