Auckland Airport is undertaking its most significant transformation of the departure hall since the 1970s, introducing new technology and design to create a faster, more intuitive check-in experience.
Over the next few years until 2029, check-in will be reconfigured to replace traditional counters with common-use kiosks and automated bag drops, giving travellers more choice and reducing queues. These digital systems have already been trialled in one zone, with feedback from airlines helping refine the design for the wider rollout. Shared-use flexibility means kiosks and bag drops can be used by different airlines throughout the day, making better use of space and supporting greater competition and choice for travellers.
The upgrade is also future-proofed, with the ability to integrate biometric processing and digital travel credentials as they become more widely adopted, while still supported by airport staff for travellers with special requirements. By the end of the decade, domestic jet and international flights will once again check in under one roof, creating a centralised space that connects directly with the new domestic jet terminal now under construction.
Work will be staged to keep the airport operating smoothly, with a temporary check-in pavilion built beside the Transport Hub to maintain capacity during construction. The transformation will expand the terminal footprint by 2,800m², improve pedestrian flow and refresh the look and feel of the departures area. The result will be a check-in experience that reflects the expectations of modern travellers and positions Auckland Airport alongside the world’s leading airports.
